With winds of up to 185 mph (298 km/h). The fourth tropical cyclone, third tropical storm, second hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 1935 Atlantic hurricane season, the Labor Day hurricane was one of four Category 5 hurricanes on record to strike the contiguous United States, along with Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Camille in 1969, and Hurricane Michael in 2018. In addition, it was the third most intse Atlantic hurricane on record in terms of barometric pressure, only behind Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

The hurricane intsified rapidly, passing near Long Key on the eving of Monday, September 2. The region was swept by a massive storm surge as the eye passed over the area. The waters quickly receded after carving new channels connecting the bay with the ocean; however, gale-force winds and rough seas persisted into Tuesday, disrupting rescue efforts. The storm continued northwestward along the Florida west coast, weaking before making its second landfall near Cedar Key, Florida, on September 4.

The compact and intse hurricane caused catastrophic damage in the upper Florida Keys, as a storm surge of approximately 18 to 20 feet (5.5 to 6.1 m) swept over the low-lying islands. The hurricane's strong winds and the surge destroyed nearly all the structures betwe Tavernier and Marathon. The town of Islamorada was obliterated. Portions of the Key West Extsion of the Florida East Coast Railway were severely damaged or destroyed. In addition, many veterans died in work camps created for the construction of the Overseas Highway, in part due to poor working conditions. The hurricane also caused more damage in northwest Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

An area of disturbed weather developed northeast of the Turks Islands toward the d of August. By August 31, a definite tropical depression appeared near Long Island in the southeastern Bahamas and quickly intsified. It reached hurricane intsity near the south d of Andros Island on September 1.

The storm th explosively intsified and turned toward the Florida Keys at a speed of 10 mph. The storm had an eye 9–10 miles (14–16 km) across. The storm made landfall late on September 2 near Long Key, at peak intsity, with an intsity of 892 millibars (26.3 inHg) and 1-minute sustained winds of 185 mph (298 km/h). After leaving the Keys, the storm weaked as it skirted the Florida gulf coast, making a second landfall at Cedar Keys. The storm sped up and rapidly weaked over the Mid-Atlantic states, causing heavy rainfall, with the highest total being 16.7 inches (420 mm) in Easton, Maryland. This was about 27 miles (43 km) north of Isabela de Sagua, Villa Clara, Cuba, and 145 miles (233 km) east of Havana. Captain Leonard Povey of the Aviation Corps of the Cuban Army (Cuerpo de Aviación del Ejército de Cuba) volunteered to investigate the threat to the capital. Flying a Curtis Hawk II, Captain Povey, an American expatriate, who was the Aviation Corps' chief training officer, observed the storm north of its reported position. Because he was flying an op-cockpit biplane, he opted not to fly into the storm.

The somewhat compsating effects of a slow (7 knots, 8.1 mph) translational velocity along with an extremely tiny radius of maximum wind (5 nmi, 5.8 mi) led to an analyzed intsity at landfall of 160 knots (184 mph; 296 km/h). The 1935 Labor Day hurricane is tied with 2019's Hurricane Dorian for the highest intsity for a landfalling Atlantic hurricane in HURDAT2, as 1969's Hurricane Camille has be reanalyzed in 2014 to have the third highest landfalling intsity with 150 knots (173 mph; 278 km/h).

The hurricane left a path of near-total destruction in the Upper Keys, ctered on what is today the village of Islamorada. At Camp #3 on Lower Matecumbe the surge arrived near the d of the calm with the wind close behind.

Nearly every structure was demolished, and some bridges and railway embankmts were washed away. The links—rail, road, and ferry boats—that chained the islands together were brok. The main transportation route linking the Keys to mainland Florida had be a single railroad line, the Florida Overseas Railroad portion of the Florida East Coast Railway. The Islamorada area was devastated, although the hurricane's destructive path was narrower than most tropical cyclones. Its eye was eight miles (13 km.) across and the fiercest winds extded 15 miles (24 km).) off the cter, less than 1992's Hurricane Andrew, which was also a relatively small and catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. Craig Key, Long Key, and Upper Matecumbe and Lower Matecumbe Keys suffered the worst. The storm caused wind and flood damage along the Florida panhandle and into Georgia, and significant damage to the Tampa Bay Area.

After the third day of the storm corpses swelled and split op in the subtropical heat, according to rescue workers. Public health officials ordered plain wood coffins holding the dead to be stacked and burned in several locations. The National Weather Service estimated 408 deaths from the hurricane. Bodies were recovered as far away as Flamingo and Cape Sable on the southwest tip of the Florida mainland.

Magnum photographers explore the body through images that examine a range of subjects from identity, intimacy, sexuality and ritual, to voyeurism and performance

The exhibition The Body Observed, opening at the Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts on 23 March, explores how the body has been looked at through the documentary lenses of 14

The exhibition is curated by the Sainsbury Centre in collaboration with Magnum Photos in response to the Sainsbury Centre’s extraordinary collection of European modern art – focused on the figurative in 20th Century modern art, as well as their significant early ethnographic collection of figurative objects from non-Western nations. Pablo Picasso, Edgar Degas, Francis Bacon, Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti and Amedeo Modigliani are all represented in the collection. 

International Face And Body Art Day

Considers the photographic representation of the human body, specifically in relation to the documentary photograph, and reflects upon how photographic representation both mimics and corrupts the tropes of figurative representation defined through the history of art, developing its own language through the medium’s unique position between utilitarian function and artistic application. In a multitude of ways, the camera has been used to express the body; to describe or suggest its function and form as well as metaphysical sensations; to gaze upon, objectify and categorize the body; and to view the body as a signifier for broader societal examination or reflection. Works presented in the exhibition explore thematics such as gaze, identity, intimacy, sexuality, voyeurism, ritual, and performance; drawing into focus the social and cultural structures that affect the representation of the human form.

Early studio works by Werner Bischof are an aesthetic ordering of form, as light and shadow falls on anonymous female torsos accentuating and hiding curves and features. After completing his artistic education in Switzerland under prominent members of the avant-garde, Bischof engaged in a search for beauty in pure form, as well as in nature. An interest in abstraction is present throughout Bischof’s early work, and here the body is photographed by display and omission, treated for its formal values as aesthetic object.

Photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen Seamlessly Integrates His Body With The Natural World — Colossal

Photographs by Herbert List, made across Europe and the Mediterranean between 1933-1958, highlight his fascination with both photograph and sculpture, as well as with the interstitial space between the two. In the selection of works shown, the ancient world, is depicted through Classical sculpture in Greece and Germany, which appears to be animated by the myth of the sculptor Pygmalion, wherein he makes a statue so beautiful that he falls in love with it. After begging the goddess Aphrodite to bring him a wife as captivating as his statue, she instead, brings Pygmalion’s sculpture to life. Reading List’s images through this narrative, and taking into account the time in which they were made, as war raged across Europe, photographs reference the fragility of human form through its mortality. A melancholy runs through the work as we contrast the weathered and ancient sculptures, still standing, against the glistening and rippled torsos of young men, human flesh whilst gazed on in desire, is permeated by impermanence.

This idea of the fragility of form appears again in the late Tim Hetherington’s intimate portraits of soldiers asleep on tour in Afghanistan (‘Sleeping Soldiers’). The single figures in slumber, curled up on camp beds, bare of uniform, show the men depicted as individuals lost in repose; vulnerable, fallible, essentially human. While the figures are stripped of any exterior roles within a war zone, the war renders the calm bodies all the more exposed in this tender examination of masculinity.

In Philippe Halsman’s ‘Jumpology’ series, the body appears to be both subject, and obstacle to be coaxed. His photographs of male and female celebrities often incorporated elements of humor, play and performance. In the early 1950s, Halsman began to ask his subjects to jump for his camera at the conclusion of each sitting. In these uniquely witty and energetic images, the formal pose of the sitter falls away, and the subject loses a degree of control of their image. In each jump, Halsman’s subjects are photographed actively inhabiting their body, in all its energy, awkwardness, and imperfection.

With a reputation for creating sensitive depictions of public figures, most notably Marilyn Monroe, in 1959, Eve Arnold was invited to photograph Joan Crawford, one of the few silent film stars who had weathered the advent of ‘talkies’ to become one of cinemas most lauded stars. A range of vintage prints in the exhibition from this series explore the female body in relation to aging and the cult of celebrity, whereby the female icon is measured by beauty and youth. Arnold focuses on the beauty rituals at Crawford’s home that preluded her public appearances, and here we see the work involved in the construction of this body image. Whilst the camera freezes the moment, the body continues to change with time and age.

Gilden frames his figures, and moves around his subjects, close-cropping to focus in on details – a shapely leg, a swinging hip, the female body fetishized and aestheticized bringing to life and adding allure to the clothing. There is also humour in his juxtapositions, a gazelle-like model towering above over an older woman on a sidewalk serves to emphasise the absurd, otherworldly nature of this particular kind of female beauty when encountered amongst the grit and grime of a New York sidewalk.

Through the work of Susan Meiselas,  Bieke Depoorter,  Olivia Arthur, and Alessandra Sanguinetti, themes of gender, sexuality, gaze, and identity are explored. Olivia Arthur’s ‘In Private’ shows the body as a site for exploring gender and sexuality in India against the socio-political constraints imposed upon individuals. Arthur initially worked in Mumbai with sitters who identify themselves as being part of the LGBTQI+ community, a community that represents contemporary diversity in relation to sexuality and gender. From this starting point, the photographer expanded the range of subjects to engage with the wider topic of sexuality in all its forms. Capturing intimate exchanges between a couple lost in embrace against lone individuals looking in and out of the frame, gaze is ever present in this work. Denial of privacy and the implications of being seen inhabit the photographs that are installed hanging together in a tight cluster. As a viewer, one peers in from vantage points on these intimate moments, as Arthur questions privacy in a political context whereby one’s most intimate moments are under the scrutiny of law.

Susan Meiselas’ ‘Carnival Strippers’ is considered an important work both within the history of photography and feminism. In the early 1970s, Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing women who performed striptease as part of small town carnivals in the United States. Meiselas records the dynamics of performance, on stage and off, photographing both the subjects’ public performance and their private lives. In Meiselas’ portraits, the girls formally present themselves to her camera, posing, confronting. Throughout the work, there is an ever-present question about control; are the subjects (the girls) or the onlookers (the ‘customers’, the carnival barkers) in control? The female body here is neither simply the posed, silent nude or the exposed, naked self. The images of sexualized display are countered by the images made ‘behind the curtain’; the girls relaxing, climbing past one another, tidying. The body that is in one moment objectified, is in the next, domestic, ordinary. Work is the dominant theme. In the exhibition, the photographs are accompanied by an audio piece whereby the pomp of the carnival callers and racket of audience excitement is contrasted with the girls matter-of-fact talk about the realities of the job.

Opening up the dynamic between photographer and subject, and between voyeur and object, is Bieke Depoorter’s ongoing work ‘Agata’. Agata, a young woman who Depoorter met in a strip bar one night during a moment of disillusion with photography,  employs her body as a tool in performance.

Not the one dancing in a strip club or performing violent acts during the techno parties.”

Michael Davies, known to some as "The Chupacabra", is the secondary antagonist of Chapter I. He appears in a flashback in Chapter II and had a cameo role as an apparition in Chapter III. He's a teenage boy that had been transformed into a thin, pale creature after being possessed by an unknown demon and locked within a basement for three months.

At two weeks of possession, Michael's hair appeared to be thinning, his eyes were a bright red color, and his teeth appeared to have become sharp. His pose seemed to suggest he had become rather sluggish at that point in time.

At three months, he was completely unrecognizable. He had become hairless, his eyes were larger, and had an unnaturally wide, ghoulish red smile. Blood profusely seeps from his eyes and mouth, causing him to become anemic with such blood loss. His limbs are constitutively bent due to contracting rickets, a disease that occurred because of being restraint in a dark room for months with no sunlight. Once he broke off his chains, he rapidly crawls on all fours even though he's capable of running; his movements almost making him appear like a four-legged spider. Judging by the report from a Sterling local, he had an unnaturally pale color to his skin. Even though he appears sickly, he boasts raw strength and capable of overpowering anybody.

Frequently Asked Questions

It's not clear what Michael was like before his possession. After not only being possessed by a demon, but being trapped under a priest's care, Michael was transformed into a savage creature that took joy in killing and devouring the flesh of humans and animals alike. He had a habit of mocking his enemies by quoting biblical verses and referencing the Bible. He also had the habit of swearing in Spanish, but it's not clear if he already knew the language or picked up on it from the priest's usage.

Although it looks like Michael is having a good time with scurrying about and killing animals, there's secret animation in Chapter I that implies that he's in constant pain. His demon controls the majority of his actions, but the animation shows him shaking his head in pain and crawling solemnly.

On his first day of getting taken into custody, he looks completely normal. This can cause debate whether he was truly possessed or not since his parents could've interpret normal behaviors (or even mental illnesses) as possession. But, as we'll see soon, there's only one credible evidence that he was possessed.

On this day, a priest named Father Garcia was assigned by Cardinal Gifford, his superior, to exorcise a young boy called Michael. Michael's parents believe that he's been afflicted with a violent demonic possession and were struggling to find somebody to help him. Taking him into custody, Garcia keeps Michael chained on a bed in the basement of his apartment room to keep him and others safe. He takes photographs of Michael with his polaroid camera and dates them so that he can show Gifford and the parents on how Michael is doing and prove that he's unsafe to be released.

Father Garcia has been struggling to exorcise Michael, the demon possessing him is strong and isn't backing down. By day, the possession is putting a serious strain on Michael's body, where his hair is thinning, looks sluggish, teeth sharpening, and his eyes are turning bloody red. Overall, he looks miserable and sickly. Garcia takes another polaroid picture of Michael and intends on showing it to Gifford whenever he's questioned on how the boy is doing.

Cardinal Gifford has been pressured by Michael's parents to see him since they haven't in a little over a month. While a representative of the Vatican tries to compensate them due to how long it's taking, Gifford mails a letter to demand Garcia to return Michael to his parents; Lightly implying that he will be sent to Rome, where the Vatican is stationed, and get denounced as a priest. Garcia ignores the request and continues taking care of Michael, feeling as if he's too dangerous to be released.

Sometime before September 20th, it's been roughly three months ever since Garcia has taken Michael under his care. Although he believes he's made great progress with Michael over the past couple of weeks, the demon possessing the boy is taking a heavy strain on the body. Taking off his priest collar, Garcia attempts to run outside to catch Michael to resume the exorcism, but he's seemingly scurried away into the outskirts of Connecticut.

Garcia has no choice but to wait until he gets some kind of evidence as to where Michael could be.

Sue Nicholson is retiring from the Monroe Chamber of Commerce this week after decades of work advocating for businesses and working to drive economic development in northeast Louisiana.

Nicholson has had a long career of service. She's worked with the Ruston Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Boy Scouts of America, acted as president of the West Monroe-West OuachitaChamber for nine years and served as the Assistant Vice President of External Affairs at the University of Louisiana Monroe.
